Chapter 10- In chapter 10 the authorities try to find who and where chrise lived, they went down very many dead ends until they came across wayne who gave them Chris's social security card and they found out where chris lived and how his half brother had to go tell their parents that chris has died in Alaska.

Chapter 11-Chapter 11 is when you find out a great deal about Chris's life. A description of Chris's grandfather to whom he was very similar is introduced. Also it gives a description about what Chris was like during his younger years. He was a very competitive person and once his mind was set on something, he had to finish it. He tried many sports but found his sport in crosscountry. He was also very intelligent and good at everything he tried. He spent his Friday nights helping the homeless instead of partying like a lot of people he knew. He also had strong opinions about money. He didn't want to have anything to do with it but was really good at making it.

Chapter 12- Chapter 12 centers around Chris's anger toward his father. Chris's father had a child named Quinn with his other wife while he was in love with Billie, Chris's mom, and on one of Chris's journeys out west, he discovered this fact. When Chris got to college, his resentment and disconnection from his parents began to grow and he eventually just stopped contact with his parents. At the end of his college years, he decided that he was going to go on his journey to Alaska. After graduation, he left without any notice to his parents. This greatly troubled his mother.

Chapter 13- Chapter 13 focuses mainly on the effect Chris's death had on his sister, Carine and the rest of Chris's family. Chris was very close to his sister and she was very similar to him. Once she found out that he died, she went into a state of denial and she starts to starve herself. Her mother does something very similar. His father though does the opposite though and gains 8 pounds. His death took everyone by surprise and his family was very effected by the means of his death.

Chapter 14- Chapter 14 introduces the story of the author, Jon Krakauer. Jon was very similar to Chris. He was against authority and his parents just like Chris was, over ambitious like Chris, and he also wanted to go out on his own. He unlike Chris did come prepared for the trip because he told people where he was going. He was aware of the dangers but was willing to take the risk anyway. His journey was not to last in the Alaskan wilderness, but to climb Devil's Thumb. Chris's flaw was he set his goals too high. He took a route that no one had tried and that he did not come with enough equipment that he could survive if he didn't make it. He also to a point refused to accept defeat and ridiculed by his family and friends. In this chapter, he did not meet the goal of the top of the mountain but he is keen not to give up.
